About Displays
When you are out on track, monitoring the performance of your vehicle can be vital in maintaining durability and improving your speed. But traditional, fixed-scale gauges are limiting, and trying to keep an eye on a large cluster of instruments while racing is almost impossible.
There are many advantages of using a single digital display, not least of which is the ability to customise screen layouts. MoTeC displays are designed for flexibility, allowing drivers to configure multiple 'pages' with the information they most want to see at any given time, for example during practice, qualifying and race. This might include RPM, lap time details, gear, fuel and engine vitals. During qualifying, drivers will usually want a running lap time comparison showing gain/loss against a reference lap, and during a race they might want to see the lap number and fuel remaining.
Unit preferences are selectable—Fahrenheit or Celsius, psi or kPa, kilometres or miles—and unlike analogue gauges, scales can be defined and redefined. This allows users to hone in on particular RPM ranges, pressures or temperatures as desired. And if another sensor is added, instead of requiring a separate gauge, it is simply configured as a new selectable channel.
Each numerical item is programmable and can be overridden by user-defined conditions or warning messages. Warnings are one of the key benefits of a digital display, and many a racer will attest that for this reason alone MoTeC displays are well worth the investment. Warnings can be programmed for dangers such as low oil pressure, high engine temperature or wheel lock up, alerting drivers to take action that could prevent costly damage.
